As I sit looking outside from my glass-paneled Sunroom in a suburban metro New York neighborhood, I am looking at a veil of smoke and orangish Sunshine. I wistfully look out wishing that I could get out into my garden and water my recently planted Mimosa tree, but I can not!
Media and local leaders have warned me not to go out due to the horrible air quality, which has already lasted for 3 days. It may compromise my health because of the thick smog that has been wafting in most of the Northeastern United States. We are being told that it may last a few more days because of the forest fires in Quebec, thousands of miles away!! And there seems to be no end in sight! To protect ourselves we must wear thick masks if we must go out. Shades of the ghost of Covid-19!!
It makes me wonder about the effect on the local economies, even as we are struggling with the specter of recession!
We are all connected.
It also makes me wonder about the oft-repeated philosophical, metaphysical statement, “We are all connected”. Our intense focus on individuality has made us oblivious, and in denial that you and I and the Canadians, the Chinese, Indians, and others on this earth have much connection. However, events of the recent past and this virtual shutdown, once again are making me rethink this mindset.
Even as we try to obfuscate the need to pay attention to the environmental crises by endlessly discussing and debating about ESG and its implementation, and metrics, it is becoming clearer that yes, indeed we are all connected, whether we want it or not! And yes the “Butterfly” effect is real! Not acknowledging that each one of us has a responsibility to bring about balance in our environment, and Ignoring it would be like Nero playing the fiddle when Rome BURNED!
Just as our body signals a diseased state by sending out symptoms to avert catastrophic illness, Nature is communicating loud and clear!
